US Flag – Setup Tutorial

I was recently asked how to set up a flag graphic where the top and bottom stripes are consistent in width with the other 5 red strips. After a closer inspection of my flag files I noticed that mine were also a bit wider. So I decided I’d correct my file and make a tutorial on how it’s done.

We will start with a graphic from Wikipedia to insure we’re starting with the appropriate size and aspect ratio. I use Affinity Designer as my graphics package to create SVG files, but others will work as well, such as Adobe Illustrator, or Inkscape. I simply switched to Affinity Designer when Adobe forced the subscription model on their users.

I’ll show how to setup the stripes and stars within Carbide Create. This is the free software from Carbide 3D chat accompanies the Shapeoko. However, you can use other software if you like.

The end result is a file that you should save as a starter file for your future projects. Use this file as a template and import whatever logo you’re wanting to overlay onto the flag. The file is available from my Plans tab.
